This excellent resource has a Historical layer, which gives options to show all the sites and features recorded on the Cornish HER, including the EH Mapping programme. Unsually, it differentiates between different periods. Because of the high level of detail, you have to zoom in quite a way for some layers to become active. Just a shame there are so few Roman period sites in Cornwall!
This excellent resource has a Historical layer, which gives options to show all the sites and features recorded on the Devon HER. Sadly, the mapping is not as clear as some systems, but a very useful resource none the less. Exeter, Exmoor, Plymouth and Torbay have their own HERs and are not covered.
Exmoor HER’s map is excellent for being purpose built, however the choice of mapping colours makes it very hard to use.
North Somerset HER’s map is excellent for being purpose built, although sometimes a bit slow to respond.
Somerset HER’s dedicated website, run by South West Heritage Trust, has a fully searchable online HER as well as an interactive map, making one of the most useful of these systems. North Somerset has it’s own HER and online system.
Bristol’s interactive mapping system “Know Your Place”, which not only gives access to the HER, but a whole range of other material such as historic mapping, photographs and even archaeological reports which can be downloaded as pdfs. Sets a standard for others to follow.
Uses Know Your Place, the same system used by Bristol, which not only gives access to the HER, but a whole range of other material such as historic mapping, photographs and even archaeological reports which can be downloaded as pdfs. Sets a standard for others to follow.
A form based search facility, rather than an interactive system, but very useful nonetheless
